OREM, Utah — The Grand Canyon men's and women's cross country teams are geared up for WAC Championships taking place at Lakeside Park in Orem, Utah, on Friday morning.
In the
conference's pre-championships polling, the Lopes' men were picked by coaches for a fourth-place finish. California Baptist, Utah Valley and Southern Utah were the top three choices in the men's poll. On the women's side, Utah Valley, California Baptist, Southern Utah, UT Arlington and Seattle U were the poll's top five choices.
The women's 6k run will start at 9 a.m. (Phoenix time) and the men's 8k will follow at 9:45 a.m. (Phoenix time).
A pair of newcomers have been the top finishers on the men's and women's sides for the Lopes. Sophomore
Ethan Smith led GCU's runners in the Sept. 28 Dave Murray Invitational and the Oct. 19 Bronco Invitational. Similarly, senior
Shoshanah Stukas led the women in both competitions.
The GCU men are coming off their best performance of the season by placing fourth in a 17-team field at the Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, California. After Smith crossed first for the Lopes, a tight Lopes grouping of junior
Greyson Akers, graduate
Emmanuel Corral and junior
Alex Rafferty finished 27th, 29th and 30th among point scorers. It was GCU's best-ever finish at the Bronco Invitational.
The Lopes are looking to improve on placing fifth (women's) and seventh (men's) at the 2023 WAC Championships. GCU's program-best finishes were third-place showings in 2021 (men) and 2019 (women).
