GCU scheduled to play Southern Utah in final WAC series of season

The Grand Canyon softball team will host its final series of the season, against Southern Utah, with a doubleheader on Friday at 4 p.m. (Phoenix time) and one Saturday game at 1 p.m.

3 THINGS TO KNOW

The Lopes will celebrate Hannah Burnett, Kaila Eastburn, Kinsey Koeltzow, Madison Schaefer and Annie Villalobos, on Senior Day, Saturday.
GCU is led by Hannah Burnett (.400 .avg), Kristin Fifield (69 RBIs) and Meghan Golden (1.89 ERA).
The Lopes lead the WAC in 10 of 17 categories and hold a top-25 NCAA ranking in nine of those same fields.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN UTAH

Southern Utah has not won a WAC series this season, and has been swept on four occasions (Abilene Christian, Seattle U, Utah Valley, Utah Tech).
The Thunderbirds have only won three total games during the WAC season, defeating UT Arlington (W, 4-3), Stephen F. Austin (W, 10-8), and California Baptist (W, 12-2).
Southern Utah is led by Emily Gonzalez (.408 avg, 29 RBIs), and Payton Goodrich (7.68 ERA).

LAST TIME OUT

Game 3 - The Grand Canyon softball team clinched its sixth WAC series of the season, improving to 14-7 in conference play with its 9-0 victory at California Baptist. Lopes sophomore pitcher Emily Darwin (7-3) threw her second complete game and her second shutout of the season.
Game 2 - Meghan Golden threw nearly five innings of no-hit ball before notching a complete-game, single earned run game, win Friday night to even the series.
Game 1 - Senior pitcher Ariel Thompson and the Lopes stranded seven Lancers on base to maintain their 3-2 lead through the top of the sixth but were met with the tying run when CBU reached base on a single, and GCU allowed its third triple of the season. In what looked to be a promising final inning, the Lopes left the bases loaded before the Lancers hit consecutive seventh-inning doubles for a Game 1 walk-off win.
