BLAINE, Wash. – The Grand Canyon women's golf team concluded the three-day WAC Championship on Tuesday afternoon at the Semiahmoo Country Club, earning fifth place out of 12 schools.
The Lopes shot 40 over par for the tournament, with rounds of 299, 313 and 292. Tuesday's team score of 4 over par was the day's best in the field and tied for the lowest single-day team score for the tournament.
Sam Houston won the team title at 19 over, followed by Seattle (27 over) and New Mexico State (28 over). The individual title was decided by a four-way playoff with California Baptist's Hailey Loh winning at 2 over.
On the challenging Semiahmoo course, GCU started well with one birdie and 14 pars through its first 15 holes combined. Junior
Becca Tschetter may have had the shot of the tournament, as she eagled on the par-4 No. 5 after four straight pars to start her day. in the three-day tournament, Tschetter was the only golfer to eagle. Tschetter's round ended at 1 over as she finished 10 over for the tournament in a tie for 13th.

Constanza Guerrero, who shot 10 over for the tourney and 2 over for the day despite being ill in the days leading up to the tournament. Guerrero tied for first among the entire field with 42 pars over 54 holes as GCU had the second-most pars for the week with 172. Guerrero's front nine Tuesday included eight pars and one birdie as she earned the top-15 placement.
Junior
Carly Strole not only had one of the best rounds of any golfer Tuesday but of the tournament. After a Monday 85, Strole improved 15 strokes and shot a 2-under 70 with three birdies. Strole was one of five golfers to shoot 70 in the tournament, as she had the biggest third-round jump of any golfer in the field to gain 17 spots and tie for 35th at 18 over.

Ryan Flynn and senior
Carmen Belmonte shot 13 over for the tournament and tied for 19th as four Lopes finished in the top 20. Flynn birdied three of her six holes and bounced back from a double bogey on No. 10 with a birdie on No. 13 to shoot 4 over for the day. Belmonte had 11 pars and two birdies with a 1-over back nine to card a 3-over scorecard Tuesday.
It is the fifth straight WAC Championship that the Lopes have finished in the top five. The WAC will announce its all-conference teams in the coming days.
Day 2 recap
The Grand Canyon women's golf team completed Day 2 of the WAC Championship at Semiahmoo Country Club on Monday and sits in a tie for sixth place out of 12 teams at 36 over par with one round to play.
Sam Houston leads the tournament at 9 over, while California Baptist is second (16 over) and New Mexico State is third (17 over). Tsara Ralamboarison of Southern Utah leads the tournament at 1 under, making her the only golfer in the 59-player field to have an under-par scorecard after two days.
Guerrero leads GCU at 8 over as she shot 6 over for the day. Guerrero tied for most pars after the first round (14) and is the field's leader with 28 after two rounds. As a team, the Lopes are second in total pars with 114, two back from New Mexico State.
One shot back of Guerrero are Flynn and Tschetter. Both golfers are 9 over after each shot 6 over on Monday to tie for 25th entering Tuesday's final round. Tschetter, who shot the best back nine score at 1 over par, led the squad with three birdies for her round while Flynn tallied two.
Belmonte is tied for 30th at 10 over par while Strole is tied for 52nd at 20 over.
Day 1 recap
Through one round of the WAC Championship at the Semiahmoo Country Club, the Grand Canyon women's golf team kept within striking distance of first place, shooting 11 over par in rainy weather conditions as it currently sits in fourth place of 12 teams.
Sam Houston finished day one in first place at +5, while both California Baptist and Seattle U are tied for second at +8.
GCU's spring slate included multiple tournaments in either cold or rainy weather, including the Valley Invitational in Stockton, Calif., in early February or the rainy two-day Red Rocks Invitational in mid-March in Sedona. The Lopes climbed back into contention in both of those tournaments - ultimately winning the Red Rocks Invite – and did so today as it is seven strokes back of first and three strokes back of second.
GCU, ranked third among the WAC schools via Golfstat rankings at No. 93, was 8 over par through its first 20 holes played. The team settled in, with each respective golfer tallying a birdie over their next seven holes with a plethora of pars to finish out the round. The Lopes ended day one tied for the most pars among the 12-team field at 62.
Of the starting five, Guerrero tied for the most pars among a single player with 14 in her round as she finished +2 for the day and is tied for 10th. Guerrero was even through her first nine holes with a birdie on hole five.
A trio of Lopes all finished one stroke back of Guerrero at +3 and tied for 12th. Flynn, Tschetter and Belmonte all shot a 75 to put four players in the top 15. Both Tschetter and Belmonte had two birdies each as the Lopes tallied seven for the afternoon. Strole is tied for 38th as she shot 7 over. Despite a +7 front nine, Strole had the best back nine of the group, shooting even par with a birdie on 11 to put her well within striking distance of a top-20 placement into round two.
