Head coach
Molly Miller and her Grand Canyon women's basketball program added top-notch experience and rebounding prowess with the signings of twin sisters Sydney and Laura Erikstrup.
Â
Natives of Portland, Oregon, the Erikstrups enter Phoenix with each having two years of eligibility remaining.
Â
Sydney comes from Arizona State, where she made 26 appearances with 11 starts for the Sun Devils last season, averaging 3.0 points and 2.4 rebounds with a near 75% clip from the free throw line.
Â
Laura appeared in 82 of 84 possible games for San Diego throughout her career, earning West Coast Conference All-Academic honors with averages of 4.8 points and 3.8 rebounds for her junior year.
Â
"We are so excited to welcome Laura and Sydney to GCU," Miller said. "The dynamic duo both bring a unique dynamic to the floor in addition to their height and length. Laura is a tough and mobile post player that provides depth for us in the paint. Sydney can stretch the floor and provide some perimeter length that will fit well in the system. The twins are high-character individuals who we know will fit the GCU mold and culture of our program."
GCU finished third in offensive rebounding in the WAC last season and bolsters that area by adding sisters whose offensive rebounding efforts equaled 40% of the Lopes' output last season.
Â
Laura gathered 118 rebounds last season with 12 games of five or more boards. Sydney tallied 63 rebounds, including eight games with multiple rebounds on the offensive glass. The Lopes add two players who are taller than 6 feet, with Laura (6-2) and Sydney (6-1) adding to a team that had four 6-footers last season, including
Evan Zars and
Olivia Lane combining for 12.1 rebounds per game.
Â
The duo attended Beaverton (Oregon) High School, where Sydney was named to the all-state team twice and her all-league team four times while Laura garnered all-metro accolades twice and a Three Rivers honorable mention.
