The Grand Canyon softball team fell for only the second time this season in a 5-0 loss to No. 12 Washington at GCU Softball Stadium on Sunday.
The Lopes managed three hits but were held scoreless, with four runners left on base, as the Huskies (18-3) recorded their fourth consecutive shutout and backed it with seven hits.
"Even though today was tough, I thought it was a really good weekend," Lopes head coach
Shanon Hays said. "When you play a good team like Washington, you have to be at your best, but we missed some offensive opportunities and our pitching didn't come in fresh because I overthrew some girls yesterday. That cost us in the end."
Senior right fielder
Kristin Fifield, junior left fielder
Kayla Rodgers and junior
Kaitlyn Brannstrom led the Lopes offensively with one hit apiece, while GCU used five pitchers junior
Hailey Hudson, sophomore
Emily Darwin, senior
Ariel Thompson, senior
Kaila Eastburn, and freshman
Taryn Batterton threw 2 2/3 no-hit innings.
Meanwhile, Huskies junior pitcher Lindsay Lopez recorded four strikeouts through three innings before being relieved by winning pitcher, freshman Ruby Meylan, who had four strikeouts in four innings.
Washington put three unanswered runs on the board in the top of the fourth, as GCU left two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth.
The Huskies then posted a two-run home run, stretching their lead to 5-0.
Unfortunately, going three and out in the fifth and sixth, the Lopes came up short in the bottom of the seventh despite a single from Brannstrom.
