A matchup of 11-4 teams comes to Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark on Tuesday afternoon as Grand Canyon welcomes in New Mexico for a 2 p.m. first pitch.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

LOPES AND LOBOS: Grand Canyon and New Mexico continue a series that has been contested in seven of the last eight seasons. The Lopes topped the Lobos 7-2 in Albuquerque last year. Before not playing one another in 2021, GCU and New Mexico had faced off in two-game midweek series from 2015 to 2020. The Lopes have won three of the last four meetings.
WAC SWEEP: The Lopes got two big sweeps over the weekend. Most importantly, GCU won all three games of its conference-opening series against New Mexico State. The Lopes followed it up with a sweep of the WAC's weekly awards with junior shortstop Jacob Wilson earning WAC Hitter of the Week and junior left-hander Zach Thornton being named WAC Pitcher of the Week.
BYE, PHOENIX: GCU has had quite the home-heavy beginning to 2023, not having to leave the Phoenix metro area in its first 16 games. That changes quickly as the Lopes head out for their first true road games. GCU will play eight of its next 11 on the road and 24 of its remaining 39 games away from GCU Ballpark.

SCOUTING

New Mexico has matched GCU's 11-4 start to the season. After starting the season in Surprise, Arizona, with wins over Oregon State, UC Santa Barbara and Minnesota, the Lobos recorded three weekend wins at home each against Northern Colorado and St. Bonaventure. The Lobos opened Mountain West play by taking two of three from Air Force at home.

The Lobos enter Tuesday's matchup with the nation's best batting average at .368, .016 higher than the nearest team, and most runs per game at 11.5. New Mexico has played 10 of its first 15 in Albuquerque. The Lobos have three players hitting over .400.

New Mexico is under second-year head coach Tod Brown who took over the Lobos program after 14 years at North Dakota State. In his debut season at New Mexico, the Lobos went 21-33 overall and 10-20 in Mountain West play.

WHAT'S NEXT?

GCU plays its first true road games when it heads to Sacramento State for a three-game conference series beginning on Friday.
