Grand Canyon softball dominated Day 1Â of the Purple Classic, shutting out Utah State and Montana State on Military Appreciation Day.Â
Lopes level AggiesÂ
Despite going seven innings with Utah State, it only took four hits and two innings of scoring to dismantle Utah State on Friday. The Lopes posted three runs in the first and two in the third and won 5-0 behind junior pitcher
Hailey Hudson's five-hit compete game with seven strikeouts.
With GCU seniors
Kristin Fifield (right fielder),
Madison Schaefer (third baseman), and
Ramsay Lopez (first baseman) on base, junior left fielder
Kayla Rodgers tripled to right center to clear the bases in the bottom of the first.Â
In the bottom of the fifth, Dunckel reached base after being hit by a pitch, and was brought in with a Schafer home run.Â
Hudson, a Yavapai College transfer, improved her season record to 5-0.Â
GCU takes Montana in 5
The Lopes took control early in their Friday nightcap as well, building an eight-run lead while holding Montana scoreless for the 8-0, run-rule victory in five innings. Â
Â
GCU senior center fielder
Hannah Burnett reached base on a walk and stole second to put herself in scoring position before Fifield doubled to right center. Schaefer followed with a single to third base to score Fifield, and junior designated player
CC Wong singled to center field to bring Schaefer home.Â
The Lopes extended their lead in the bottom of the second, when freshman pinch runner
Emma Rodrigues scored on a sacrifice bunt from junior shortstop
Katelyn Dunckel.Â
Â
It was in the third that the Lopes loaded the bases and capitalized on the moment. Montana walked in GCU's fifth run, senior catcher
Annie Villalobos sent a sacrifice fly out to center field for Rodgers to score, and Dunckel doubled to left center to send junior first baseman
Lovey Kepa'a across the plate. Â
Lopes senior ace Ariel Thompson threw five strikeouts without a walk in four innings to earn the win and move to 3-1 this season.
