KAPOLEI, Hawaii – The Grand Canyon men's golf team concluded its fall season Thursday at the Kapolei Invitational, carding a team score of 22 under par to tie for 13th out of the 18-team field at the Kapolei Golf Course.
The Lopes shot even par in Thursday's final round to tie Miami (Ohio) for the 13th spot. It finished best among WAC schools competing, with a two-stroke lead over California Baptist and 17-stroke advantage over Utah Valley.
Senior
Nicky Kling finished best for GCU, tallying a 9-under card after an even-par final round. Kling had four birdies Thursday to bring his three-day total to 13 birdies and two eagles for a 22nd-place tie in the 114-player field. Kling was 1 over entering the back nine and rattled off three birdies in four holes on the back nine to even his scorecard.
Lopes senior
Matthew Pennington shot 7 under for the tournament and had the team's lowest Thursday score at 2 under. He had five birdies and an eagle, the squad's fifth eagle of the tournament, to tie for 37th. Classmate
Tommaso Zorzetto was one stroke behind him at 6 under and tied for 44th with an even card in his final round. Zorzetto had four birdies in his final round.
GCU sophomore
Antonio Bulgheroni tied for 93rd at 4 over and freshman Lopes freshman
Gavin O'Neill tied for 100th at 6 over. Both golfers had three birdies apiece Thursday.
GCU will take a couple months off before heading to California for the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Feb. 2-4. It returns to Hawaii on Feb. 15-17 for the John A. Burns Invitational before hosting the annual GCU Invitational on March 12-13.
