GCU trio ranks in top 10 heading into final round Sunday
PARADISE ISLANDS, Bahamas – Grand Canyon remained in third place after Saturday's second round of the White Sands NCAA Invitational with the final round coming Sunday.
The Lopes are 25 over par for the tournament, sitting one stroke back of second-place North Florida and 14 shots back of first-place Kansas State while holding a 17-shot lead over fourth-place Delaware.
GCU was one of three teams to have a lower team score in its second round than in Friday's first round, despite windy conditions near the oceanfront leading to high scores throughout the invitational.
Three Lopes head into Sunday in the top 10 with junior Leighton Shosted and senior Becca Tschetter tied for sixth at 5 over. Shosted shot 1 over Saturday with three birdies and opened her day with a birdie on the par-4 first hole. Tschetter notched three birdies and replicated what she did Friday with two birdies over her final four holes.
GCU senior Constanza Guerrero is 7 over for the tournament and tied for 10th overall. Guerrero had three birdies Saturday and has six tournament biridies, which is tied for third most among the 64-player field. GCU's 25 birdies lead all teams heading into the final 18 holes.
Lopes sophomore Ryan Flynn is one shot back of Guerrero at 8 over for the tournament. Flynn shot 3 over Saturday with three birdies to move into 14th place. GCU enior Carly Strole is tied for 29th at 14 over par after carding one birdie and having a stretch of eight straight pars from holes 11 to 18.
The third and final round of the White Sands NCAA Invitational concludes Sunday morning. The round is the last fall tournament play for the Lopes before a three-month break.
So far through the first round in the Bahamas, the Lopes are on pace to do just that.
GCU finished 14 over par in a windy morning session at the Ocean Club Golf Course that saw no team in the 11-team field card an under-par score. The Lopes sit in third place, two strokes back of North Florida in second and nine strokes back of leader Kansas State.
In a 64-player field, all five Lopes ended the first day in the top 20, led by Guerrero in a third-place tie at even par. Guerrero began her day with a bogey on the par-5 second hole and bounced back with five pars and a birdie on the par-5 sixth to get back to even. After a bogey on the ninth, she once again settled in with six pars, two birdies and only one bogey over her final nine holes to finish even on the day.
Shosted is tied for 16th at 4 over with two birdies to her name so far in the tournament. Shosted birdied her second to last hole (No. 1) to put herself within striking distance of a top-10 finish with 36 holes to play.
Also in striking distance are Tschetter, Strole and Flynn, who all shot 5 over and are tied for 20th. The trio combined for seven birdies, with Tschetter tallying two birdies over her final four holes to help keep the Lopes within range of the top team spot.
The 12 birdies from the GCU squad led all 11 teams for the round with its 49 pars ranking fourth best. The Lopes also led the field in par-4 scoring, averaging 4.18 per par-4 hole.
