The Grand Canyon women's basketball team got started from the get-go, rallying off 11 straight points to open the game and holding a double-digit lead for three quarters to defeat Tarleton 70-51 on Thursday night at GCU Arena.
GCU improved to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in WAC play. The win was head coach
Molly Miller's 50th at the helm of GCU, improving her record at the school to 50-21 (.704) and 230-38 (.858) overall.
The Lopes had 10 scorers in the rout, led by sophomore guard
Aaliyah Collins' 14 points, three rebounds and three steals in 19 minutes. Collins entered the game 14th in the nation in steals and recorded her fourth straight game with three or more steals.
GCU junior forward
Olivia Lane also reached double digits with 10 points and three rebounds, while junior forward
Tiarra Brown had five points and eight boards.
Graduate student
Evan Zars is nearing another milestone for her career as she is now six rebounds shy of 1,000. She finished the night with six points and five boards. The Shawnee, Kan., native tallied 1,000 points earlier this season vs. Columbia College and is looking to become the sixth active NCAA D1 player to achieve 1,000 career points and rebounds.
Zars got her six points in the first three and a half minutes of play to fuel GCU's 11-0 run. Tarleton (6-8, 0-3 WAC) got within five (11-6) but no closer as GCU ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 20-6.
The Lopes led by as much as 22 in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 40-22 advantage.
GCU controlled the second half, leading by double digits the whole way to win by 19 for its second-straight conference win.
GCU shot 55.3% from the floor, its second highest percentage of the season. It made six threes for the night, the eighth game with six or more made threes this season.
