The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team hosts UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton and California Baptist for the Big West/WAC Challenge this weekend.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- The Lopes host fellow WAC member California Baptist but will not play against the Lancers until Oct. 1 in conference play.
- GCU leads the conference and ranks 43rd nationally in service aces (65) this season. Sophomore outside hitter McKenize Wise holds 32nd in service aces (17) and 60th in aces per set (.52) in the nation this season.
- Senior setter Klaire Mitchell ranks 47th nationally in total assists (329) this season.
SCOUTING UC IRVINE
- The Anteaters enter the Big West/WAC Matchup 6-2 after posting six consecutive 3-0 wins while sweeping the UCI/Adidas Invitational and the UCI/CSF Invitational.
- UC Irvine ranks No.1 in assists per set (13.96) and No. 2 in kills per set (15.08) nationally this season.
- Junior middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu's hitting percentage of .474 ranks second in the nation this season.
SCOUTING CAL STATE FULLERTON
- The Titans come to Phoenix at 4-2 with a three-match winning streak against Southern Utah (3-2), Gonzaga (3-1) and Weber State (3-1).
- Cal State Fullerton holds No. 2 in team attacks per set (39.65) and No. 6 in digs per set (17.52) nationally this season.
- GCU and Cal State Fullerton have only met once in program history (a 3-1 Lopes loss on Sept. 3, 2016).
LAST TIME OUT
GCU at UNI Tournament
- GCU completed the UNI Tournament at 1-2 after defeating Southeast Missouri (3-2) and falling to Western Michigan (2-3) and Northern Iowa (2-3).
- Outside hitters Melanie Brecka, a graduate student, and McKenzie Wise, a sophomore, earned all-tournament honors.
