Grand Canyon shortstop
Jacob Wilson earned an invite to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp, a prestigious selection of the nation's 48 premier non-draft eligible college players and a first for a member of the Lopes program.
"GCU baseball is so excited for
Jacob Wilson," Lopes head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "What a year he had and now to top it off with an invite to the USA Collegiate National Team. It's a proud day for the GCU family."
Wilson and the other selected players will head to North Carolina to be featured in a five-game intrasquad series that takes place on June 30 through July 4 in Cary, Durham and Charlotte. A final roster of 26 will be selected to represent the United States on an international stage at the Honkbalweek Haarlem tournament in the Netherlands the following week.
"I woke up to a call this morning from Coach Stankiewicz and was pumped to be one of the 48 guys invited," Wilson said. "USA Baseball has always been a dream of mine, and I'm very grateful to have received the invitation."
Wilson adds to an already impressive resume he has built in his two seasons at GCU. As a freshman in 2021, Wilson hit .313 to earn Freshman All-American and first-team All-WAC honors. He improved upon that as a sophomore this year, hitting .358 with 65 RBIs and landing on the All-WAC first team once again. Wilson — who was also one of
31 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award — was the nation's toughest player to strike out with only seven strikeouts in 246 at bats.
The Lopes have won back-to-back WAC regular-season titles and made a pair of NCAA regional appearances during Wilson's tenure.
The Collegiate National Team will be led by Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco, who will make his USA Baseball managerial debut this summer.
The U.S. has competed at Honkbalweek Haarlem five times since 2000 and has earned four gold medals in that time, including winning the championship in its most recent appearance at the event in 2014. The Collegiate National Team dropped its first contest of the tournament that summer to Japan, 1-0, but then did not lose another game, finishing with a 7-1 record and outscoring opponents 34-5 in its final six games to claim the gold. Team USA also won gold in the 2000, 2002, and 2008 editions of the event and earned a bronze medal in 2012.
