Grand Canyon sophomore shortstop
Jacob Wilson was named one of 31 national semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, the premier college baseball honor given annually by USA Baseball to the top amateur player.

Wilson advanced from the midseason watch list on Tuesday, just as he was named to the All-WAC first team and is ranked as the nation's No. 5 shortstop by D1Baseball.com.
The Thousand Oaks, California, native has helped GCU (39-17) to a No. 25 national ranking and the WAC West Division championship with .350 hitting, .578 slugging, 11 home runs, 61 RBIs and a .409 on-base percentage. He is the nation's toughest batter to strike out with only seven strikeouts this season, giving him one every 32 at bats.
When GCU split four games against top-five teams Stanford and Oregon State, Wilson went 9 for 17 (.529) with a home run, two doubles and five RBIs. The Lopes' nonconference strength of schedule ranks seventh in the nation, according to D1Baseball.com.
For a March 14-20 stretch, Wilson was named the national player of the week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Perfect Game, D1Baseball.com and Collegiate Baseball. He hit .783 during a five-game wee with three home runs, 13 RBIs and a 1.348 slugging percentage.
Wilson and Sam Houston outfielder Carlos Contreras are the only WAC players among the 31 Golden Spikes semifinalists. GCU is one of 26 programs represented on the list.
The Lopes continue their quest for back-to-back NCAA tournament bids with this week's WAC Tournament at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, where they will open with a 7 p.m. Wednesday against Abilene Christian.
The semifinalist ballot will be sent to a group of 150 voters, including media, pro baseball personnel and USA Baseball staff. Each voter will pick three semifinalists, leading to a June 8 announcement for the finalist list. Fans can also factor into the finalist list with votes cast on the
USA Baseball web site. The winner will be announced June 24 on ESPN.
