GCU sends 4 to prestigious Cape Cod League for 1st time
With a program-record four headliners headed to the prestigious Cape Cod League, Grand Canyon baseball continues into the summer months as the Lopes scatter across the nation.
Elijah Buries, Homer Bush Jr., Connor Markl and Jacob Wilson — who will all be GCU juniors next year — are headed to the Cape Cod League, a collegiate summer wood bat league in Massachusets. Bush and Markl will join the Yarmouth–Dennis Red Sox, Buries will join the Hyannis Harbor Hawks and Wilson is set to join the Orleans Firebirds.
Wilson will balance his time in the Cape Cod League with his newly added USA Baseball Collegiate National Team responsibilities.
The Cape Cod League gets underway on Sunday, with all other summer leagues already underway.
Previous Cape Cod invitees from the Lopes program have included Jake Wong, Kade Mechals, Quin Cotton and others.
The summer baseball schedule allows GCU players to gain more experience by facing off against fellow college student-athletes in various leagues across the country.
Due to the consolidation of Minor League Baseball last year, some leagues — such as the Appalachian League and MLB Draft League — consist of teams and stadiums that were formerly a part of Minor League Baseball but have been reassigned to collegiate summer leagues.
One of these teams — the Greeneville Flyboys of the Appalachian League — features four Lopes: Beau Ankeney, Ronnie Belton III, Ryan Schiefer and Tyler Wilson. Incoming left-handed pitcher Zach Thornton will play in the MLB Draft League.
A mainstay in summer league baseball, the Northwoods League, will feature three GCU representatives. Home to the largest crowds in summer ball, the Mankato MoonDogs will feature three Lopes in Dustin Crenshaw, Hunter Omlid and Cade Verdusco.
Other GCU players are bound for the Alaska Baseball League, West Coast League, Independence League and Rocky Mountain Baseball League.
