Lopes outperform conference members in overall success again
When Grand Canyon puts each of its good teams together, the accumulation makes for one great team of GCU Athletics that distinguished itself atop the WAC again this year.
The WAC Commissioner's Cup stays with the Lopes, who captured the conference's honor for cumulative athletic success for the second consecutive year and the fourth time in the past five years.
With 10 WAC championships, GCU won the 2021-22 Commissioner's Cup handily with 75.5 points, which was 21 points better than runner-up Stephen F. Austin after the Lopes won with a 20.5-point gap last year.
"The profile and strength of the WAC continues to grow, and we are excited to, once again, earn the Commissioner's Cup award," GCU Vice President of Athletics Jamie Boggs said. "This honor is a testament to the hard work of our coaches, student-athletes and staff, the tremendous support from our President (Brian Mueller) and partners throughout campus, the best student body in the country, and the most positive and supportive fanbase. The entire GCU community earned this award, and we are so thankful to be a part it."
The Lopes' total was bolstered by WAC postseason championships in women's soccer, softball and track and field (men's and women's indoor and men's outdoor). The Lopes also scored Commissioner's Cup points for regular-season conference titles in baseball, men's and women's soccer, softball and women's tennis.
The Lopes have won the Commissioner's Cup by at least 12 points in each of the past four fully completed athletic years. In 2019-20, GCU finished two points off the lead when only nine sports seasons were completed because of COVID.
In an expanded conference with 20 sports, the WAC implemented a new formula for the Commissioner's Cup.
Each school's top 15 finishes are counted in scoring. Points are awarded in each sport with six points to the winner, five for second, four for third, three for fourth, two for fifth and one point to all teams that finish sixth or worse.
Â
Only the regular season is counted for soccer, volleyball, football, basketball, tennis, softball and baseball. For cross country, indoor track and field, swimming and diving, golf and outdoor track and field, points are based on the WAC postseason results using the six-point per sport scoring system. Affiliates are used as a placeholder but are not scored. Any team, except in golf, that earns an NCAA automatic qualifying spot from a WAC Championship is awarded one point.
