Grand Canyon was left looking for a breakthrough hit in the second game of a three-game series with New Mexico State, falling 3-1 to the Aggies on Saturday night.
Trailing 3-1, the Lopes (17-11, 9-2 WAC) had promising scoring opportunities in the eighth and ninth innings with two runners getting on base early in each inning. In the eighth, however, two strikeouts and an out at home plate kept the Lopes from scoring. In the ninth, GCU had the tying run in scoring position but lined into a double play to end the game.
GCU matched New Mexico State (11-13, 3-8 WAC) in the hits column with 10. The Aggies scored three runs by hitting 3 for 8 (.375) with runners in scoring position while the Lopes were just 1 of 10.
After the Aggies scored the game's first run in the third, the Lopes quickly countered in the third. Junior left fielder
Adrian Torres led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a balk and scored on an RBI single by sophomore second baseman
Dustin Crenshaw.
Crenshaw had a game-high three hits.
New Mexico State scored the go-ahead run in the seventh and added a run in the eighth. GCU pitching limited the damage in both frames, using a strikeout to strand a runner on third in the seventh and a double play with a play at the plate to end the eighth.
GCU sophomore first baseman
Elijah Buries continued his hit streak, extending it to 17 games. It's the longest hitting streak by a Lopes batter since Tom Lerouge hit in 17 straight games during the 2017 season.
Lopes freshman right-hander
Daniel Avitia tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out five.
GCU will look to win a rubber match for the second straight weekend in Sunday's 12 p.m. series finale at GCU Ballpark.
