GCU's new director of sports performance joins after 13 years at Louisville
Zach Farrel has been named Grand Canyon's director of sports performance, the department announced on Thursday. Farrel comes to GCU after spending 13 years in the sports performance department at his alma mater, Louisville.
"I am overwhelmed with gratitude for this opportunity to join the team at Grand Canyon University as the Director of Sports Performance," Farrel said. "I would like to thank Jamie Boggs and Nick Ojea for the opportunity to join Lope Nation."
Farrel graduated from Louisville in 2009 and joined the university's sports performance department as a graduate assistant. Over his 13 years working in the department, he advanced from graduate assistant to performance coach to senior performance coach to his most recent position as the assistant director of sports performance.
"Our vision is to have an elite sports performance department at GCU to help support our programs' championship goals," Vice President of Athletics Jamie Boggs said. "Zach is the right person for this role, and we're excited for him to get to campus. Thanks to Nick Ojea for leading an efficient and successful search."
In his role, Farrel will be responsible for the oversight of GCU's sports performance department, which includes developing strength and conditioning programming for GCU student-athletes as well as managing and advising sports performance staff.
"My mission is to enhance the culture in the sports performance department that will allow student-athletes to grow in integrity and athletic excellence," Farrel said. "My family and I are eager to become a part of this Grand Canyon family. Go Lopes!"
During his time as an undergraduate at Louisville, Farrel was a member of the university's cheerleading team. He graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor's in Exercise Science and in 2011 with a Master's in Exercise Physiology.
In 2019, Farrel received the Gatorade Young Achievers in Strength and Conditioning award. He has also been featured as a speaker in the classroom at Louisville, at the American Baseball Coaches Association National Conference and at the Proforce Baseball Summit.
Farrel will move to Phoenix with his family, which includes his wife, Caleigh, a 6-year old daughter, Sutton, and a 3-year old son, Zeke.
