GCU falls to UCLA, beats Cal Poly on Day 2 in Los Angeles
The No. 7 Grand Canyon beach volleyball team battled to the final Mapes Beach court before falling 3-2 to No. 2 UCLA in its first Battle for LA Invitational dual on Sunday but bounced back to take down No. 11 Cal Poly 3-2 for the first time since 2016.
After the first wave of pairs, the Lopes and Bruins were tied 1-1, with GCU's sophomore pair on Court 2, Allison Hansen and Allanis Navas, picking up the 21-18, 23-21 win. On Court 5, fifth-year pair Dana Roskic and Cami Sanchez won the thriller 21-16, 13-21,15-10 to pull the Lopes ahead 2-1. UCLA won against GCU's No. 4 pair to tie the dual at 2-2. UCLA won the tiebreaker with a tight final set on Court 3.
GCU defeated the Mustangs for the first time since 2016. The dual was tied 1-1 after the first round of pairs was complete. Hansen and Navas earned their second pair win of the day on Court 2 in straight sets. On Court 5, Roskic and Sanchez finished the weekend 4-0 after taking down Cal Poly 26-24, 21-19. The dual was clinched by DeFalco and Morin in dominant fashion on Court 3 with scores of 21-13, 21-12.
The Lopes are back at GCU Beach Volleyball Stadium next weekend to take on Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday and Missouri State on Saturday.
