Grand Canyon closed the season with a fourth consecutive double-digit victory, sending off its seniors justly with the departing duo of guard
Holland Woods II and forward
Sean Miller-Moore inflicting some of the victory's biggest damage.
Woods delivered 13 points and seven assists with no turnovers and Miller-Moore posted 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals in just 20 minutes to lead the Lopes to a 70-53 win in their regular-season finale at GCU Arena. The Lopes will be the WAC Tournament No. 4 seed with a bye into a Thursday night quarterfinal at 7 p.m. (Phoenix time) in Las Vegas.
GCU's emotions were as sky high as the highlight reel of Miller-Moore alleyoop dunks from Woods. The Lopes (22-7, 13-5 WAC) missed eight of their first nine shots and spotted the Trailblazers a 14-4 lead before a proper Senior Night celebration began.Â
Woods led the turnaround with all of his 11 first-half points during a 21-5 run that put GCU ahead for good. The score flipped in a hurry when GCU, after an 0-for-7 start on 3-pointers, sank 3s on four consecutive possessions in a stretch of 1:47 with two by Woods and on each from sophomores
Jovan Blacksher Jr. and
Gabe McGlothan.
GCU's transition offense and depth sent the Lopes to a 34-27 halftime lead after sophomore power forward
Yvan Ouedraogo, who grabbed 14 rebounds (nine offensive), slammed from one of Woods' seven assists.
Dixie State made one early second-half push with an 8-0 run that included McGlothan picking up his fourth foul with 16:33 to go. But Woods kept finding teammates with alleyoops, throwing that pass as well as any Lopes player has in the Division I era of the program. His alleyoop to junior center
Aidan Igiehon stopped the Trailblazers run and sparked GCU when Igiehon's offensive rebound set up Blacksher to find guard
Chance McMillian for a 3 and a 43-37 lead.
Graduate guard
Walter Ellis added a pair of 3s to break the game open as the Lopes defense, which held Dixie State to 33.3% shooting, did not allow a point for nearly four minutes. If the game was still in doubt with a 59-47 lead, it was out of reach once GCU scored seven unanswered points. Miller-Moore pulled down the curtains with three alleyoop dunks in an 85-second span, allowing senior walk-on
Raef Gerdes to enter for his farewell too.
