Grand Canyon swept WAC weekly honors with sophomore shortstop
Jacob Wilson earning hitter of the week and freshman right-hander
Daniel Avitia earning pitcher of the week.
Wilson had a career week, racking up 18 hits in five games. He hit .783 in the Lopes' 4-1 week that including a midweek victory at No. 5 Oregon State and a conference sweep of Utah Valley. Wilson homered three times, doubled four times and drove in 13 runs.
At one point, Wilson had base hits in 10 consecutive at bats spanning Friday through Sunday.
"That's impressive," GCU head coachÂ
Andy Stankiewicz said following Sunday's win. "We talked about how well he keeps his barrel through the zone and the ability to use the whole field. He's had a great week, not only here but over there in Corvallis as well. It's fun to see. He's working hard. He's got a good approach to the plate and stays within himself."
Avitia joined the weekend rotation for the first time in his college career and impressed. He tossed 6 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, limiting Utah Valley to three hits and setting a new career high with 11 strikeouts. He was the winning pitcher in GCU's series-clinching win.
"I felt great, couldn't have felt better," Avitia said after the Saturday win. "Just really the game plan was to just attack them. Make them earn it. I've always had this confidence. I've always known I was good. I just needed to go out there and show them what I had."
The Lopes took home both the hitter and pitcher of the week awards in the same week for the first time since opening weekend of last year.
GCU travels to Arizona State and Sacramento State for this week's action.
