The Grand Canyon men's volleyball team completed a weekend sweep of Harvard, picking up a second straight 3-0 win on Sunday at GCU Arena.
The GCU (11-8) defense came to play against Harvard (6-8) as the Lopes tallied nine blocks and limited the Crimson to just .019 hitting for the match.
The Lopes took the first set 25-22 thanks to a strong showing from redshirt junior
Hugo Fischer. The left-handed opposite hit a set-high .462 and collected six kills with no errors. GCU fell down early but regained the lead with a quick 4-0 run and later extended its lead to 16-11 with another 5-1 run. Tied at 22-22, the Lopes closed out the set with two straight kills from Fischer and a combo block from redshirt sophomore outside hitter
Jackson Hickman and junior middle blocker
Colin Lovejoy.
Like in Saturday's match against Harvard, the Lopes dominated the second set, winning 25-16. The Lopes took advantage of nine attacking errors from Harvard in the set and Janke led the way with six kills on .500 hitting. The Lopes jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the set with three of those points coming off Crimson attacking errors and led the rest of the way. GCU extended its lead to eight points later in the set off redhshirt junior middle blocker
Kyle Thompson's first ace of the season.
In the third set, GCU turned to its bench and gave redshirt sophomore middle blocker
Chibuike Obi and redshirt junior outside hitter
Grayson Browning a start in a 25-22 set win. Both Lopes immediately made their presences known, combining for a block on the second point of the set while Obi added a kill to tie the score at 3-3.
The teams combined for eight runs of at least three straight points in the third set. Harvard pulled ahead 11-9 with a 4-0 run but GCU countered with an extended 6-1 run to take the lead back at 17-14. Like in the first set, the Lopes closed out the set with three straight points. Janke collected a kill and partnered with Obi on a block to give GCU match point. A Harvard attacking error gave the Lopes their fourth 3-0 win of the season.
Twelve Lopes saw the court in the win and Janke led all players with 10 kills while four Lopes had multiple blocks.
GCU will continue the homestand next week with two matches against Tusculum on Friday and Saturday.
