GCU outside hitter tallies 52 kills in 2 wins at BYU
After two dramatic road wins for the Grand Canyon men's volleyball team, Lopes outside hitter Christian Janke was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Offensive Player of the Week.
Janke was nearly unstoppable in two wins at No. 13 BYU this weekend. The redshirt junior tallied 52 kills in the matches, including 31 kills in a five-set win on Sunday to tie the GCU single-match record. It is also the first 30-kill match by a Lope since Ryan Mather in 2015.
The GCU outside hitter leads the conference in points (53), kills (52), kills per set (5.78) and fourth in hitting percentage (.595).
In a four-set win on Saturday, Janke began his weekend with 21 kills and only one attacking error in 33 attempts. His .606 hitting was a season high and he also added four digs and a block assist in the win.
On Sunday, Janke performed at his best when the Lopes needed him after falling behind 2-0 to the Cougars. In the final three sets, Janke recorded 15 kills with just one error on .636 hitting as the Lopes came all the way back in the reverse sweep.
Janke and the Lopes will hit the road this week for two matches at No. 1 UCLA on Thursday and Friday.
