PROVO, Utah – The No. 9 Grand Canyon men's volleyball team opened a two-match visit to No. 13 BYU with a 3-1 win on Friday night in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.
GCU (8-6, 2-1 MPSF) came to play, outhitting the Cougars .412 to .310 while outside hitter
Christian Janke led the way with 21 kills on .606 hitting with only one error.
It was the second 20-kill game for the redshirt junior in the last three games and the first time he reached that mark against BYU in his career.
The Cougars (5-8, 0-1 MPSF) were backed by 3,149 fans in Smith Fieldhouse and took the first set 25-21. BYU outhit GCU .360 to .185 and was led by four Cougars with three kills each.
GCU settled into the match and evened the match score with a 25-19 win in the second set. The Lopes turned .185 hitting in the first set into a .583 mark in the second set with only two attacking errors in 24 attempts.
It was back-and-forth early in the set before the Lopes went on a 3-0 run to take the lead at 9-6. GCU led the rest of the way, going on an extended 8-2 run later in the set to push the lead to 20-14. Janke made his presence known with six kills on nine attempts while five Lopes combined for 5.5 blocks in the set.

Hugo Fischer took control and collected 15 of the team's 17 kills in the set. Gianni added two service aces.
The Lopes closed out their first road win at BYU with a 25-22 fourth-set win. GCU was on point offensively again, hitting .500 on 22 attempts. After recording six errors in the first set, the Lopes only had 11 in the final three sets.
It was a close set most of the way with Janke giving GCU a 19-17 edge with back-to-back kills, but the Cougars answered and tied the score at 22-22.

Gianni and Fisher collected 16 and 13 kills, respectively, while Thompson locked down the middle with seven kills and five blocks. Slight reached the 50-assist mark for the second time in the past three matches.
GCU will look for the series sweep against BYU on Saturday at 7 p.m. (Phoenix time).
