GCU hosts 19 matches, faces 4 NCAA tournament teams
The Grand Canyon men's volleyball team released a packed 27-match schedule for the upcoming spring season.
The Lopes will have 19 home matches, including 16 at GCU Arena after the Lopes finished with an 11-5 home record last season. GCU will open this season with home matches against Lindenwood on Jan. 6 and 8.
"We are thrilled about this upcoming season; it can not get here soon enough," head coach Matt Werle said ahead of his eighth season with GCU. "We play at least one school from each of the conferences and have a heavy home match load. Playing at home in front of the Havocs and the home crowd is so special to us.
"There are a couple 'bye' weeks for us that don't come at the best of times, especially the last weekend of MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) play, but it could be in our benefit to rest bodies at that time if we can find a way to keep our practice gym competitive throughout that week. The guys are ready and I can not wait to be a part of their journey this season."
The first road trip takes the Lopes across the country to George Mason, where GCU will face the host and Ohio State in the Patriot Invitational on Jan. 13 and 14.
GCU returns back home for the first of six matches in an eight-day stretch against Erskine and UC San Diego on Jan. 27 and 29 in GCU Arena before hosting a midweek contest against Lees-McRae in Antelope Gymnasium on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. The busy week concludes with a pair of matches against UC Irvine on Feb. 3 and 4.
After a final tune-up match against Arizona Christian on Feb. 10, the Lopes will hit the road for their first MPSF matches against USC on Feb. 15 and 17 and Pepperdine on Feb. 22 and 24. The Waves advanced to the NCAA tournament last year after becoming the first No. 3 seed to win the MPSF Championship since 2007.
March will begin a monthlong, 10-match homestand in GCU Arena, beginning with conference matches against BYU on March 3-4. The Lopes will face two NCAA tournament teams, including last year's No. 2 national seed Ball State (March 8) and Princeton (March 15 and 17).
MPSF play resumes against Concordia on March 24-25 before the final two home matches of the regular season against UCLA on March 31 and April 2.
The Lopes will wrap up the regular season at Stanford on April 7 and 8. GCU will use the two matches as preparation for the MPSF Championship, which will be hosted by the Cardinal on April 19-22.
