GCU trio chosen for all-conference 1st team; Mitchell makes 1st team for 3rd time
Grand Canyon players Melanie Brecka, Klaire Mitchell and Tatum Parrott were named to the All-WAC first team by a vote of conference coaches.
Mitchell, a senior setter, made the All-WAC first team for the third consecutive season while Brecka, a graduate outside hitter, and Parrott, a freshman outside hitter, were selected to the All-WAC first team in their first season as Lopes.
Melanie Brecka | All-WAC 1st team
As a graduate transfer from Kansas State, Brecka claims her sixth career postseason honor and her fourth WAC postseason award in five seasons, earning All-Summit first team in 2021 and 2020, All-WAC second team in 2018 and 2019 as well as All-WAC Freshman Team in 2018.Â
Brecka, a 6-foot outside hitter, gathered the second most kills (149), solo blocks (6) and points (168) on GCU during the conference season, hitting an average of .323 through 50 sets.Â
The native of Lincoln, Nebraska, also was named WAC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 3, posting 15 kills, 16 points and a hitting average of .429 when the Lopes swept California Baptist earlier this season.Â
Klaire Mitchell | All-WAC 1st team
Mitchell has now collected six WAC awards in her four years at GCU, including two WAC Setter of the Year awards when she was also All-WAC first team in 2020 and 2021. The Couer d'Alene, Idaho, native also made the All-WAC second team and won WAC Freshman of the Year in 2019.
The Lopes' all-time assist record holder reached the 3,000-assist club last month, becoming only the 14th active Division I player with 3,000 assists and a career average of 10 assists per set. Six GCU sweeps later, Mitchell sits at 3,270 assists, totaling 587 during conference play this season to rank first with an average of 11.51 per set.Â
