The Grand Canyon women's tennis team began the construction of the 2023 roster with the high-profile signing of Valeriia Krokhotina.
Â
Krokhotina will join the Lopes next year from Saint Petersburg, Russia, bringing an impressive Universal Tennis Rating and multiple single and doubles titles from competition in Europe.
Â
"I am thrilled to announce the addition of Valeriia to the 2023 roster," GCU head coach
Katarina Adamovic said. "She will have not only an impact on our ability to compete for championships and draw eyes to GCU at a national level, but she will positively impact the culture and team we are growing. She is a fierce competitor who will bring the energy and hard work daily. Valeriia has a desire for continued growth in her game, and her best tennis is still ahead."
Â
Adamovic's first signing as Lopes head coach brings Krokhotina, who has an UTR rating of 9.74. Her high rating is backed up with singles titles at the International Tennis Federation G4 events in Tallinn, Estonia and Tampere, Finland this year. She also captured singles and doubles titles in National First A category.
Â
Krokhotina is coached by her mother, Olga, who was a professional tennis player from 1980-2001 while her dad, Vladimir, played hockey in the 1970s. Â
Â
In school, Valeriia holds a 5.0 GPA, the highest mark in the Russian school system, along with 30 diplomas of excellent studies. She chose GCU because of the athletic facilities and the team atmosphere.
Â
Adamovic and the Lopes will be in action for the dual-match season starting in January.
