The Grand Canyon cross country team is sending 10 student-athletes to the NCAA West Regionals in University Park, Washington, on Friday.
The women's 6,000-meter run will begin at 11 a.m. (Phoenix time) with the men's 10,000-meter run to follow at noon in Chambers Creek Regional Park.
"We have seven women and three men who are excited to continue their seasons at the NCAA West Regional," Lopes head coach
Paul Limpf said. "The meet features some of the best teams and individuals in the country and provides an opportunity to continue a great season. All of our athletes will toe the line with the goal of qualifying for the national championships next week in Stillwater, Oklahoma."
On the women's side, the Lopes will send graduate
Jodie Judd, juniors
Katie Hooten and
Brooke Skoog, sophomore
Stefana Purkovic, redshirt freshman
Halle Jenkins and seniorsÂ
Becca Taylor and
Kendall Drisko.
The men will send sophomores
Joseph Skoog and
Christian Fagerlin and graduate
Blake Bennett.
Judd (25th) and
Joseph Skoog (10th) were GCU's top individual finishers at the WAC Championships two weeks ago.
"The course is spectator friendly, which will be nice for all of our athletes who hail from Washington," Limpf said. "We will enjoy a bit of a 'home-field' advantage and use that to carry us throughout the course. We hope to get a few people to nationals and use this as a positive springboard into the indoor season."
Brooke Skoog hails from Snohomish, Washington,
Joseph Skoog is from Mill City, Washington, and
Halle Jenkins is from Camas, Washington.
The NCAA holds nine regional events throughout the country. The top two teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Championships, alongside 13 at-large team selections.
Individually, the first four finishers who do not belong to an automatic qualifier or an at-large team automatically advance to the championships. All four finishers have to finish in the top 25 within their region. Altogether, 36 individuals automatically qualify and two more are chosen at large.
The NCAA Championships meets are held at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Nov. 19.
