The Grand Canyon men's soccer team earned its first conference win of the season at home Friday night in front of a crowd of 3,263 fans as it defeated Utah Valley 2-1.
The physicality of both teams showed early as seven fouls were called in the first 15 minutes with two yellow cards assessed, both to Utah Valley. A third was given to the Wolverines in the 21st minute, however, it found the back of the net two minutes later to lead 1-0 at GCU Stadium.
It did not take long for a response from the Lopes, who move to 4-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in WAC play. Senior forward
Shaun Joash finished off a series of passes between junior midfielder
Ben Awashie and sophomore defender
Clayton Duarte with a 28th-minute goal, his team leading fifth score of the year. Joash, who scored nine goals last season, has scored in three of his past four games, including back-to-back contests.
The first half concluded with a 1-1 tie and 13 fouls and four yellow cards called.
GCU sophomore goalkeeper
Leon Schmidt stopped a would-be goal in the 57th minute and tallied four saves for the evening, his fifth game of four or more saves this season. The 1-1 tie broke soon after as sophomore Jibril Rodet scored his first goal as a Lope in the 59th minute.
Rodet took a through pass from freshman midfielder
Bright Nutornutsi inside the box and struck the ball with his right foot. The ball hit the right post and hovered over the line for 6 feet before trickling over it for the score.
Schmidt and the defense thwarted any Utah Valley attack the rest of the way and earned three points in the WAC standings. GCU extended its streak of consecutive WAC regular-season home victories to 10 since the beginning of the 2020 season.
GCU concludes its two-game homestand Sunday as it hosts California Baptist at 6 p.m. for Alhambra Elementary School District Night.
