Conference headquarters leave Denver, join member shift to Texas
The WAC headquarters has followed the conference membership shift to Texas and relocated from Denver to Arlington.
The WAC announced the opening of a new Arlington office that is less than 5 miles from a professional sports district with AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Field and Choctaw Stadium. The conference office was anchored in Denver for all but a brief stretch of its first 60 years.
The current 13 WAC member institutions stretch across six states, with six Texas members; Abilene Christian, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Tarleton, The UT Arlington and UT Rio Grande Valley. Grand Canyon has been a member of the WAC since transitioning to Division I in 2013, the third-longest tenure among current members.
"Our Board of Directors' goal is to continue to push the WAC into becoming one of the premier mid-major conferences in the country," WAC Commissioner Brian Thornton said. "The WAC will certainly benefit from the continued collaboration with the city of Arlington. Arlington has become one of the nation's prime athletics and entertainment destinations. The ongoing investment in the city is a clear reflection of the goals and vision that exist in Arlington, and we are excited to be an integral part of the city's growth going forward."
Arlington is among the 50 most populous cities in the United States with a population of nearly 400,000 people and is conveniently located in the middle of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The city is home to UT Arlington, the largest university in North Texas and one of the newest WAC members.
"We are excited to welcome the Western Athletic Conference headquarters to our city," Arlington Mayor Jim Ross said. "Arlington is a place where you can achieve your American dream, and the WAC certainly has an impressive record of its student-athletes achieving the highest levels of success over the years. We look forward to the conference beginning its next chapter here."
