ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Grand Canyon women's soccer team earned three big WAC standings points with a 1-0 win at Utah Tech on Friday night.
The Lopes (8-5-2, 4-3-1 WAC) handed the first-place Trailblazers (10-3-1, 6-1-1 WAC) their first conference loss and first loss at home since the season opener on Aug. 18. Entering Friday, Utah Tech had allowed just six goals all season and two in WAC play before junior forward
Lindsey Prokop scored the game-winning goal in the 75th minute.
"That was a great win," GCU head coach
Chris Cissell said. "It was a really gritty performance by both teams and to get a shutout against a really good team like Utah Tech feels good. Winning on the road in this conference is very difficult, and I was really proud of the girls and how hard they worked."
With the win and a California Baptist draw earlier in the day, the Lopes moved into a WAC Tournament spot with 13 points and three regular-season games remaining. GCU is getting hot at the right time with four straight victories and a plus-10 scoring margin in that span.
Playing on an artificial turf field for the first time this season, the Lopes adjusted n the first half but managed to take 10 shots and forced Utah Tech into three saves. After shots from redshirt freshman midfielder
Leah Pirro and Prokop that were saved, sophomore defender
Sidney Roberts had the best scoring chance but her header was saved by a Utah Tech defender on the goal line.
The Lopes were just as solid on their defensive end as starting goalkeeper
Shantel Hutton made four saves in the first half. The graduate student from Duluth, Georgia, has not allowed a goal in her last five appearances and now boasts a 0.67 goals against average in WAC play.
In the second half, the Lopes shut down the Trailblazer attack with just one shot before taking the lead. The game-winning goal was started on a build-up play by midfield substitute
Ani Jensen, sophomore, and leading scorer
Gianna Gourley, a junior. Prokop broke into space in the penalty box on a through ball by Gourley, who slotted the shot between the legs of the Utah Tech goalkeeper for her third goal of the season.
Prokop has now scored a goal in back-to-back matches and has seven points in her last three matches. Gourley also continues her hot play with 12 points in the last four matches. The GCU team captain extended her WAC lead with her 27th point.
Leading 1-0, the Lopes defended a pair of Utah Tech corner kicks well and sophomore goalkeeper
Jordan Ferguson, who replaced Hutton in the second half, made two important saves in the 81st and 83rd minutes to preserve the shutout and win.
The Lopes will travel 40 miles north for the final road match of the regular season at Southern Utah on Sunday at noon (Phoenix time).
