The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team starts the second half of WAC play with a Thursday match against conference leader UT Rio Grande Valley (17-4, 6-0 WAC) on Thursday night and a Saturday afternoon match against New Mexico State (11-7, 3-3 WAC). Five of the Lopes' final seven regular-season matches will be at home.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- Grand Canyon senior setter Klaire Mitchell needs four assists to reach the 3,000-assist career mark. She could become one of 14 players in the nation with at least 3,000 assists and a career average of 10 assists per set.
- After being limited by injury for most of the season, junior outside hitter Ashley Lifgren is enjoying a surge this month with 15 kills per match in her last four full matches played.
- GCU is 8-1 this season when hitting better than .225 in a match, including a .289 performance in last Thursday's victory at Tarleton.
SCOUTING UTRGV
- UT Rio Grande Valley has not lost a match since Sept. 19 at UTEP. The Vaqueros are on a six-match winning streak but have not played in 10 days.
- UTRGV has matched last season's win total with 17 victories and is 6-0 in WAC play for the first time in program history.
- Graduate outside hitter Sarah Cruz ranks in the top 10 nationally for points (396, sixth) and kills (348, ninth). Sophomore Luanna Emiliano is also a top-10 setter with 820 assists, which ranks sixth nationally.
SCOUTING NMSU
- New Mexico State has kept opponents to .176 hitting, the 53rd-lowest opponent hitting percentage among 334 teams nationally.
- NMSU sophomore setter Rylee Fay leads the WAC with 0.62 services aces per set.
- Aggies graduate outside hitter Molly Johnson has a streak of three consecutive double-doubles.
LAST TIME OUT
GCU at Abilene Christian
- The Lopes trailed 2-0 at Abilene Christian but rallied for third- and fourth-set wins before falling 15-9 in the decisive fifth set.
- GCU freshman outside hitter Tatum Parrott recorded 19 kills, her second-best total of the season.
- Lopes freshman libero Tatum Thomas came up with 25 digs, one off her season high.
