The Grand Canyon softball program announced its schedule for the 2022 season.
Â
"I feel like we have a solid schedule this year, especially for getting started so late in the process" Lopes head coach
Shanon Hays said.
GCU's first season under Hays begins Feb. 11, as the Lopes welcome Bradley, Fordham, Kansas, Northern Colorado and Weber State for the GCU Kickoff Tournament. Throughout the opening weekend, the Lopes will face each each team once.Â
Â
"Hosting five straight tournament weekends is great because we get to enjoy our own weather and play in front of our own fans, but it is a lot of work and hours for our staff, so we appreciate them very much," Hays said.
Â
The Lopes play 26 straight games at home before they start conference play at New Mexico State on March 18. GCU will return home for one more nonconference series on March 21, when they host Oregon State in a doubleheader.
"I think this schedule will help us play good competition early to get us ready for WAC play," Hays said. "When you play four to five games every weekend, you are made to develop your staff, so hopefully that will end up as a positive in the long run."
Â
GCU hosts Big 10 member Minnesota in a single-game meeting, followed by a game with Long Island before opening the Purple Classic on Feb. 18. The Lopes welcome Santa Clara, Idaho State, Cal State Fullerton and Long Island to the Purple Classic. Â
 Â
The Lopes are set to host the Lopes Up Classic the third weekend of February, when Colgate, Colorado State, Pacific and Incarnate Word visit. Following the Lopes Up Classic, GCU will welcome Binghamton, Montana and San Jose State for the GCU Invitational before sharing host duties with Arizona State in the final tournament.
Â
"We are piggybacking a tournament with ASU and plan on doing that twice next year which helps both of us get an even bigger variety of teams into the Valley to play," said Hays.
GCU will welcome Ball State, BYU, Rutgers and Kansas City in the GCU/ASU Classic, taking place on March 11 before the Lopes start WAC play.Â
The Lopes will play New Mexico State, Dixie State and CBU in home and home WAC games as well as hosting Utah Valley. GCU will also take on Seattle U in Seattle.
