In the first set, the Lopes (5-2) won thanks to a .417 mark in hitting while adding four blocks to limit Master's (3-2) to .286 hitting. GCU redshirt sophomore middle blocker
Jacob Guerber tallied four of his season-high seven kills and added two block assists and one solo block in the frame.
Â
GCU broke the set open from an 8-7 lead with a 6-0 run to stretch its lead to 14-7.  Master's never got closer than five points, as the Lopes closed out the set by winning the four of the final five points.
Â
In the second set, GCU took advantage of a match-low .077 hitting by Master's. Opposite
Hugo Fischer had a breakout set, recording five kills on nine attempts. GCU went on a 4-0 run that was fueled by two straight aces by Gianni to regain an early lead at 5-3 and never let it go.
Â
The Lopes held a comfortable lead at 14-7, but it was tightened to 19-17, forcing a time out by head coach
Matt Werle. GCU regrouped and closed out the set with a 6-3 run with Gianni securing the set with a kill.
Â
The third set saw both offenses come alive as the Lopes edged the Mustangs. Down 13-10, the Lopes scored four points in a row to regain the lead and maintained the slim advantage at 19-18. Two kills by Gianni and another kill by substitute
Grayson Browning put the Lopes ahead 23-20 before closing out the set.
Â
GCU outside hitter
Jackson Hickman converted all three of his attacking chances in the set, finishing with seven kills in the match. Gianni tallied seven points off five kills, a service ace and a block.
