LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 6 Grand Canyon men's volleyball team returned to form on Friday night with a 3-1 win at No. 8 UC San Diego that snapped a two-match skid.
The Lopes (3-2) outhit the Tritons (2-1) .267 to .184 while adding seven service aces, GCU's most in a match since the season-opening win. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter
Camden Gianni led the Lopes with 17 kills and four aces.
In the first set, GCU came out strong and hit .435 to win 25-21. Gianni was unstoppable as he went 7 for 7 on his attack chances and added an ace. With the set tied at 7-7, the Lopes went on a 5-1 run capped by an ace from setter
Nicholas Slight in his first start of the season. The redshirt freshman finished with a career-high 37 assists.
With the Lopes leading 13-9, UCSD regrouped and scored seven of the next eight points to take the lead back at 16-14. GCU would limit the runs the rest of the way, never allowing the Tritons to score consecutive points. Up 21-19, GCU closed out the set by winning five of the final seven points with redshirt sophomore middle blocker
Jacob Guerber's kill putting the Lopes ahead one set to zero.
It was more of the same in the second set, as GCU countered UCSD's offensive runs to win 25-19. The Tritons took an 11-10 lead after winning four straight points, only to be countered by a 4-0 Lopes run. GCU went on another 3-0 stretch later in the set to jump ahead 20-14 and closed out the set on a Tritons attacking error.
In his first start, Lopes redshirt sophomore outside hitter
Jackson Hickman recorded three of his 10 kills in the second set while adding a service ace and three digs.
UCSD avoided a sweep with a drawn-out third set to win 26-24. Both offenses stalled as each team hit under .150 and the Tritons won the final four points of the set after the Lopes held two match points at 24-22.
In the fourth set, the GCU defense limited the Tritons to a match-low .038 hitting and won the set 25-20. The Lopes trailed 4-1 before rattling off five straight points that included three straight aces from Gianni.
The Lopes never trailed from that point and the offense was aided by solo blocks from Guerber and redshirt junior opposite
Hugo Fischer, before Fischer teamed up with Gianni on another block. GCU closed out the match on a 5-2 run that ended with a Gianni kill.
The Lopes head back to the friendly confines of GCU Arena for matches against Benedictine on Thursday and Master's on Friday.
