ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team hit the road for its WAC opener and came up short in a 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 loss at Dixie State.
The Trailblazers remained undefeated at home despite a 2-7 overall mark by opening conference play with a sweep of the Lopes (8-2), who were playing their first match in nearly two weeks.
Dixie State started out on top in the opening set, but GCU managed to tie the score at 10-10 when junior middle blocker
Annabelle Kubinski took advantage of an overpass for a kill. The Trailblazers managed to pull ahead again late in the set, but GCU went on a four-point run that started with a kill from outside hitter
Ashley Lifgren and continued with freshman
Katherine Schmitt's ace and junior
Kailey Trapp's kill to tie the set at 17-17. With Dixie State at set point, sophomore setter
Ava Mason found fellow sophomore
Giorgia Turri on the pin to extend the set, but the Trailblazers then closed the opening-set win.
Turri opened the second set with a service ace and sophomore
Hope Hanak-Harper followed with a kill to give the Lopes a 2-0 lead. GCU kept a decent lead until halfway through the set, when the Trailblazers went on a four-point run for a 13-12 lead. The teams went back and forth for the remainder of the second set with the Lopes tying the score at 23-23 when freshman setter
Megan Liu found Lifgren on the outside, but the Trailblazers took the next two points for a 2-0 match lead.
In the final set, Dixie State jumped out to a 15-9 lead over GCU. The Lopes managed to cut the Trailblazers lead to four (18-14) when Mason set freshman
McKenzie Wise on the outside. The Lopes put together a three-point run late in the set, highlighted by a kill from Trapp, but it was not enough to avoid the sweep.
The Lopes are back in action on Saturday against reigning WAC champion Utah Valley in Orem, Utah, at noon (Phoenix time).
