With all of its purple and its reputation for raucous crowds, GCU Arena is the ideal home for the Phoenix Mercury's WNBA first-round playoff game on Thursday night.
GCU stepped up as the site of the win-or-go-home postseason game, which pits the fifth-seeded Mercury and eighth-seeded New York Liberty on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. A previously scheduled Maluma concert at the Mercury's usual home, Footprint Center, prompted the Thursday night move to GCU. Mercury-Liberty tickets go on sale today at noon at
mercury.wnba.com.

"The facility is first class and more than that, because of the Havocs, the reputation as a top home-court advantage speaks for itself," Mercury President Vince Kozar said. "We've wanted the opportunity to play at GCU for a long time and, thanks to the support of Mr. (Jerry) Colangelo and school administration and staff, we get that chance this Thursday."
The Mercury were planning to host a playoff game at GCU Arena in 2016, but the series ended before the if-necessary game.
This time, the Mercury (19-13) take their X-Factor fans to Phoenix with recent Olympic gold medalists Skylar Diggins-Smith, Brittney Griner and the WNBA G.O.A.T. Diana Taurasi, who won her fifth gold this summer in Tokyo. Phoenix went 2-1 this season against New York, which features Sabrina Ionescu and probable WNBA Rookie of the Year Michaela Onyenwere.
"We love that the pinnacle of women's basketball is coming to our home," GCU women's basketball head coach
Molly Miller said. "We set our basketball and fan experience standards to be like the Mercury and the X-Factor. We also have a special home-court advantage, so we can't wait to extend that to our players' role models to help the Mercury make another championship run."
Phoenix is 10-3 since the Olympic break, with the three losses coming when Taurasi was out with an ankle injury. The Mercury's ninth consecutive playoff appearance, the last eight of which came under head coach Sandy Brondello, will be the franchise's shot at a league record-tying fourth championship.
The GCU women's basketball players and coaches attended the Mercury's regular-season finale Sunday at Footprint Center. On Thursday, the Mercury invites the GCU student body.
"We are bringing the best fans in the WNBA, but we certainly welcome any and all GCU students who want to attend," Kozar said. "And, as a thank you for the hospitality, while supplies last, showing a GCU student ID at the door will get you in."
