GCU's newest associate athletic director last served at San Diego
Anthony Martinez is the newest addition to the Grand Canyon athletics department leadership, taking on the role of Associate Athletic Director for Compliance on Monday. Martinez spent the last four years at San Diego, most recently serving as the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance.
"Thank you to Vice President of Athletics Jamie Boggs and Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director Nick Ojea for allowing me the opportunity to lead the compliance office," Martinez said. "My family and I are incredibly excited and blessed to be a part of the Lopes family."
In his role at GCU, Martinez will lead the department's compliance efforts as well as take part in administrative oversight of the department as a whole. Martinez will be the sport administrator for GCU's tennis and track and field programs.
"Throughout the process, I was able to meet some phenomenal individuals at GCU," Martinez said. "I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues and student-athletes to help lead us during a time of historic change in collegiate athletics, and to contribute to the continued success of GCU Athletics."
At San Diego, Martinez held similar responsibilities, including leading the compliance office, serving as a member of the department's senior staff and handling sport oversight duties. He served on various committees to collaborate with the university community at large and ensure full institutional control.
"We are very excited to have Anthony join our staff here at Grand Canyon University," Boggs said. "He has a proven ability to work collaboratively towards department and university goals and to build comprehensive compliance systems that will ensure we continue to operate with the highest standards of integrity and excellence. Â We look forward to Anthony leading our compliance efforts as well as serving in a key position as a part of our leadership staff."
Prior to his most recent position, Martinez worked in the compliance offices at Southern Mississippi for 2 1/2 years and at Santa Clara for one year.
Martinez has experience as a four-year student-athlete and team captain with Westmont College baseball in Santa Barbara, California. He graduated with a degree in Political Science in 2008. He went on to graduate with a Juris Doctor from Golden Gate University School of Law in 2014.
Martinez and his wife, Deanna, have one daughter, Savannah.
