Outside hitter becomes 1st national team player in GCU volleyball history
Grand Canyon outside hitter Camden Gianni made history when he was named to the U.S. national team for the upcoming NORCECA Continental Championship this week.
"I am so excited for Camden," GCU head coach Matt Werle said. "It sounds like he had a great training week and was extremely offensive. Camden has a special point-scoring ability from the service line and attacking and it will be utilized at the NORCECA Championships. This honor is so well deserved!"
Lopes assistant coach Keith Smith also coached as Gianni participated at the NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation) training last week and will serve as an assistant coach during the Continental Championship this week and next week in Durango, Mexico.
Gianni, a redshirt sophomore, becomes the first GCU volleyball player to be part of a senior Team USA roster for an official event. The Carlsbad, California, native has had a busy summer training with the U.S. Collegiate National Team in July before making the NORCECA team that features a mix of professionals and up and coming collegiate players.
Team USA has had storied success on the NORCECA Continental Championship, medaling in 24 of 26 competitions with nine golds. This year, the U.S. will be slotted in Group B alongside Guatemala, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Group A features Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago.
Gianni's team will kick off the competition with a match against Guatemala on Wednesday at 11 a.m. (Phoenix time). To view the full USA volleyball release click here.
