GCU VP of Athletics named among 'Most Influential Women in Arizona'
Grand Canyon is known as a university with a rapidly advancing athletic department, a leadership group in which eight of 13 vice presidents are women, a mission that adheres to Christian principles and a diversity within the student body and staff.
Jamie Boggs' influence on each of those lanes of Lopes life has been noticed. Boggs, the GCU Vice President of Athletics, was named one of the "Most Influential Women in Arizona for 2021" by AZ Big Media.
"It is an honor to be recognized and I am thankful to serve at GCU, where our university president, Brian Mueller, not only supports but also values working moms," Boggs said. "Over half of our vice presidents are women. It is a privilege to serve at Grand Canyon University, where our Christ-centered culture fosters diversity among our faculty, staff and student body."
Already having guided a 21-sport program's rise into Division I over seven years at GCU, Boggs led the Lopes through challenging adjustments and unprecedented successes in the past year.
The Phoenix native helped GCU Athletics address COVID-19 protocols to position teams for a condensed 2020-21 competitive year. This spring, that resulted in a program-best 11 WAC championships and five NCAA tournament teams while capturing the WAC Commissioner's Cup that is awarded to the program with the greatest overall athletic achievement. At the same time, 190 GCU student-athletes achieved Academic All-WAC honors.
Boggs also partnered with Mueller to help the WAC expand with five new members that stabilized the conference's outlook. With that eye to a high-achieving future, she hired five new head coaches who either made their GCU debuts in 2020-21 or will do so in 2021-22.
Boggs is a role model as a devoted mother of two and as one of four Asian American athletic directors among 353Â Division I programs. Women make up about 14% of all Division I athletic directors in the nation.
The AZ Big Media honorees will be featured in the July/August issue of AZ Business magazine and celebrated at an Aug. 26 awards dinner ceremony at Chateau Luxe in Phoenix.
