Grand Canyon right-handed pitcher
Pierson Ohl added a prestigious honor to a growing resume, as the junior was named a second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Thursday.
Ohl is GCU's only All-American at the Division I level. He was named a freshman All-American in 2019, a year where he was also the WAC's Freshman of the Year. In 2021, Ohl was the WAC Pitcher of the Year and a first-team All-WAC honoree.
Ohl was joined on the second team by Sacramento State starting pitcher as the WAC's two representatives.
The Simi Valley, California, native goes down in the program record books as the first WAC Pitcher of the Year. Ohl posted a stretch of six consecutive complete-game victories in WAC play to help lead GCU to a co-championship.
He went 9-1 overall including an 8-0 mark with a 2.20 ERA in conference action. Ohl twice struck out 11 batters, the first GCU pitcher to post multiple games of 11 or more strikeouts in the same season since 2004. The right-hander was among the WAC's top two in nearly every stat category including ERA (second, 2.55), opponent average (first, .211), strikeouts (second, 92) and wins (first, nine). His strikeout-to-walk ratio of 8.36 ranks fifth nationally.
Ohl pitched GCU to a blowout win in the WAC semifinals against No. 2-seed Sacramento State. Ohl threw seven scoreless innings, limiting the Hornets to three hits while striking out eight. GCU's offense went to work and cruised to an 11-0 run-rule victory. For his efforts in securing GCU's place in the WAC title game, Ohl was named the WAC Tournament MVP.
GCU opens play in the Tucson Regional on Friday against No. 5 national seed Arizona at 7 p.m.
