Lopes set record margin in taking award for the WAC's top athletic program
The WAC Commissioner's Cup is back home.
For the third time in four years and the third consecutive full athletic year, Grand Canyon claimed the Commissioner's Cup this year as the WAC's most successful athletic program.
The Lopes also won for 2017-18 and 2018-19, but this GCU Athletics victory marked the most emphatic in conference history. The Lopes claimed 77.5 points for a record-setting 21.5-point gap over runner-up New Mexico State.
"Because of the support and commitment of our University, we were given the opportunity to safely practice and compete during a challenging year," GCU Vice President of Athletics Jamie Boggs said. "Our coaches and student-athletes adapted, worked hard and competed with determination while the Havocs continued to be the best student section in the country. The entire University earned the Commissioner's Cup and we are very thankful for the honor and recognition."
The WAC Commissioner's Cup is determined by a scoring format that counts the regular-season placings for baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis and women's volleyball and the men's and women's WAC Championships placings for cross country, golf, swimming and diving and indoor and outdoor track and field.
An additional point is rewarded for teams that earn an NCAA tournament automatic qualifying berth in WAC Tournaments, such as baseball, men's basketball, men's soccer and men's and women's tennis for GCU. Those five Lopes teams scored 32.5 of the 77.5 points. The track and field program accounted for another 25.5 points by sweeping the indoor and outdoor titles on the men's and women's sides. GCU won 12 outright or shared WAC titles.
GCU was in position to rally with its traditionally strong spring sports for a third consecutive Commissioner's Cup last year when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Utah Valley was awarded the honor based on the nine sports that were completed when competition was halted.
The Lopes won the 2018-19 Commissioner's Cup by 16 points over New Mexico State and took its first Commissioner's Cup in 2017-18 with a 12-point edge on the Aggies.
