For the sixth straight time in conference play, Grand Canyon right-hander
Pierson Ohl tossed a complete-game victory on Friday night. Behind the junior's two-hit shutout, the Lopes opened a four-game series against Dixie State with a 10-0 win at GCU Ballpark.
Although still a complete-game win last week at Sacramento State, Ohl labored in his last outing. This one came a little easier after throwing five perfect frames to open the game.
"This was the complete opposite, which is interesting because short rest coming off of last week, moving up a day," said Ohl, who made his first series-opening start of the season. "I told myself I have to stay down in the zone and the ball might not be coming out as hot. And I think that's a great approach to stay in the bottom zone and try to get easy outs."
Ohl retired the first 15 batters he faced before a leadoff single in the sixth.
"It's baseball," Ohl said. "That's the cardinal rule. You don't talk about it. Once I gave up the hit, everyone was all giggling and whatnot. So I knew they knew. But it was a good time on Friday night."
GCU (27-17-1, 20-5 WAC) halved league-leading California Baptist's lead in the standings after the Lancers fell in their series opener against Sacramento State. The Lopes' 20 WAC wins sit just one off the pace of the Lancers.
The Lopes offense went to work right from the start against Dixie State. GCU scored a run in the first after two singles and an error by the Trailblazers (15-27, 13-12 WAC).
GCU did the majority of its damage in the second and third innings, when the Lopes plated four runs in each frame.
The Lopes' second-inning rally was fueled by doubles from senior shortstop
Channy Ortiz, freshman third baseman
Jacob Wilson and freshman first baseman
Elijah Buries.
In the third, Wilson doubled in a run and scored on an RBI single by junior left fielder
Juan Colato. Through three innings, the Lopes had built a 9-0 lead.
"We felt good today," said Wilson, who recorded his third three-hit game of the season. "Came out swinging and came out hot. We scored one or two in the first inning, so we felt good off that. Then Pierson went out and shut it down."
GCU pushed the game into mercy-rule territory with its final run in the fourth. A string of three consecutive base hits was capped by an RBI single from junior second baseman
Jonny Weaver.
Atop the lineup, Ortiz and Wilson combined for five hits, five runs and four RBIs.
"He's my left-side partner," Wilson said of his fellow infielder. "We just play games throughout the day and see who can do the best. It's fun."
GCU has broken into double digits in the run column in four of its last six conference games.
The Lopes and Trailblazers will continue the series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
"Tomorrow's a statement day," Ohl said. "We have all the dawgs ready, which we should be super excited about to see what they're going to do."
