Grand Canyon's 20-game nonconference state comes to a close Tuesday in Tucson with a 6 p.m. matchup against No. 9 Arizona at Hi Corbett Field.
The Lopes and Wildcats last met in Phoenix three weeks ago, when senior shortstop
Channy Ortiz's 10th-inning home run
gave GCU a walk-off win, marking back-to-back wins for the Lopes over the Wildcats.
Tuesday's game will feature an
Arizona live stream and will be available via audio broadcast with GCU play-by-play announcer Michael Potter on
GCULopes.com and the
GCU Lopes app.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- THROW IT BACK TO '96: With Tuesday's matchup still looming, the Lopes already defeated Arizona and Arizona State in the same season for the first time since 1996, largely because of the fact that the Lopes and Sun Devils had only played twice previously since the turn of the century. In 1996, the Lopes played each school three times and picked up victories at UA and at ASU.
- BROCK'S BAT: Lopes center fielder Brock Burton is coming off the best weekend of his career, winning WAC Hitter of the Week for the first time. The series at Sacramento State started with a three-hit, two-homer, six-RBI game for Burton and featured three more multi-hit games. Burton went 10 for 14 (.714) with 11 RBIs during the Lopes' big series win. It was an impressive turnaround for the senior after a 3-for-23 slump in mid-April.
- YOUTH MOVEMENT: GCU's lineup card and batting average leaders are filled with underclassmen. Fab five: Elijah Buries' .318 average is the highest qualifying average by a Lopes freshman since Garrison Schwartz hit .357 when he was 2015 WAC Freshman of the Year ... Jacob Wilson upped his average from .269 to .297 over the weekend and is riding a seven-game hitting streak ... Cade Verdusco was lightly used the first three weeks of the season but has carved out a consistent role and is hitting .319 with a seven-game hitting streak ... Tayler Aguilar's .353 average paces the club and ranks fifth in the WAC ... Tyler Wilson is hitting .310 as a consistent designated hitter option for GCU.
SCOUTING
Arizona wraps an eight-game homestand and rides a nine-game win streak into the midweek matchup. Arizona leads the nation with a .333 batting average and .435 on-base percentage.
The Lopes and Wildcats continue a 54-year series that features 88 all-time meetings. The teams have played twice yearly since 2017 with the exception of 2020's cancellations.
Jacob Berry (11) and Daniel Susac (10) form the first pair of Arizona freshmen to both hit double-digit home runs in program history.
WHAT'S NEXT
GCU comes down the home stretch of the season with three conference series. The Lopes welcome Division I newcomer Dixie State this weekend. GCU then goes to another transitioning school in Tarleton before finishing the regular season by hosting conference leader California Baptist.
