Sophomore Dani Babb scores her first goal of the season vs. New Mexico State
Sophomore forward Dani Babb scored her first goal of the season on Saturday against New Mexico State. The Lopes (1-6, 1-2 WAC) fell to the Aggies (4-5, 3-2 WAC) by one goal, 2-1, at home.

"I'm extremely disappointed," head coach Chris Cissell said. "This is a game we felt like we should be able to win, especially here at home in a big conference match. Looking at the stats, I see that we outshot them 22 to 10, with 12 to seven on goal. It's just disappointing, especially the goals we gave up.

"We'll learn from this, we'll get better. We're still only three games into our conference season. Right now, it hurts and it's really disappointing because I think we were ready and prepared for this match. Last weekend was canceled, so I thought we'd be fresh and ready to go. We didn't start strong, so we were fighting an uphill battle the whole time. But I felt like the girls battled and competed and tried their best through the very end, so I'm proud of that."

Junior forward Marleen Schimmer led the Lopes on offense in the first half of the match, taking six of GCU's eight shots in the first 45 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Hayden Wallace, who played all 90 minutes for the Lopes, recorded four saves in the first half.

New Mexico State got on the board first with a goal in the ninth minute of the match. Senior defender Mikaela McGee and Schimmer tried to keep the Lopes in the game, putting two shots on goal in the 12th and 15th minutes, but the Aggie goalkeeper made both saves to hold on to the New Mexico State lead.

The Lopes continue to fight on offense, with sophomore midfielder Jaycee Iranshad striking in the bottom right of the goal in the 24th minute for another Aggie save. Schimmer took another shot at 24:22 but missed to the left of the goal.

The Aggies extended their lead with a goal on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute to lead 2-0. Schimmer made two more attempts to score, putting a shot on goal at 41:22 and drawing a foul only 11 seconds later. She took the free kick for GCU but missed the shot to the left of the goal. The Lopes had one more chance to score in the first half with a corner kick at 44:18 but were unable to produce a goal to end the first half trailing 2-0.

GCU kicked off the second half with an aggressive offense, taking two shots in the first five minutes of the half. Schimmer took two more shots in the 56th and 58th minutes but was unsuccessful. Babb finally put the Lopes on the board with a goal in the 62nd minute, getting the cross from Schimmer and heading the ball to the back-right corner for her first goal of the season, making it a one goal game.

Iranshad made a big push for the Lopes in the second half, taking shots in the 65th, 74th and 81st minutes to attempt to tie the match. Forwards Camryn Larson, a senior, and Raeanne Jones, a sophomore, also made an offensive effort for GCU, both taking two shots after the Lopes' first goal of the match. However, none of the efforts were successful and GCU fell 2-1 to the Aggies.
