NEW ORLEANS — Grand Canyon jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Tulane came roaring back to score the game's final seven runs in a 7-4 Green Wave victory at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium on Friday night.
GCU (9-12-1) posted single tallies in the second and third innings, and freshman first baseman
Ryland Zaborowski hit a two-run double in the fourth to put the Lopes in front 4-0. GCU allowed a six-run response by the Green Wave (10-10) in the fourth, however, as the home team took a lead it did not relinquish.
"We did a nice job early," Lopes head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "Their starter (junior right-hander Braden Olthoff) is good. I thought our guys did a really nice job of being patient. The guys put some really stingy at bats together to give us a shot. We just weren't able to keep it moving."
After striking for seven hits in the first four innings, the Lopes only picked up one hit in the remaining five frames. GCU's only scoring threat in the back half of the game came in the top of the ninth when the first two runners reached base. But a fielder's choice, infield fly and strikeout ended the Lopes' attempt at a rally.
GCU senior right-hander
Zach Barnes cruised through his first look at the Green Wave lineup, facing the minimum through three innings. He nearly worked his way out of a fourth-inning jam with minimal damage before a two-out grand slam flipped the script.
Senior righty
Nick Hull walked the tightrope in relief, but limited Tulane to one run to escape a fifth-inning jam in his 1 1/3 innings of work.
GCU's best relief came from sophomore right-hander
Jack Slominski, making only his third career appearance. The Scottsdale native tossed three scoreless frames and allowed only one hit and no walks.
"That's a bright spot right there," Stankiewicz said. "Jack just came in and filled it up in the zone. That's really encouraging out of him. As we get further into conference, we're going to need those types of outings from our relievers. I'm really pleased with the job Jack has done."
The Lopes struck first in the top of the second when junior second baseman
Juan Colato singled to left and came into score on a wild pitch. Sporting a No. 47 jersey for the game, Colato's typical No. 4 jersey hung in the dugout in recognition of GCU men's basketball player Oscar Frayer who was killed in a car accident earlier in the week. All GCU players also had "OF4" written on their hats.
GCU added a run in the third. Senior shortstop
Channy Ortiz hit a single into the hole at shortstop. In a key stolen base, Ortiz moved into scoring position for senior center fielder
Brock Burton's ensuing single to right-center field that allowed Ortiz to score.
The Lopes made it three consecutive run-scoring innings with two more in the fourth. After back-to-back singles from freshman designated hitter
Tyler Wilson and sophomore right fielder
Tayler Aguilar, Zaborowski stepped in and doubled to the wall in right-center field to drive in a pair and extend the Lopes' early lead to 4-0.
GCU matched the Green Wave with eight hits including multi-hit games from Wilson and Aguilar.
The Lopes will look to even the series when the teams reconvene on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. (Phoenix time).
