OREM, Utah — The Grand Canyon women's volleyball began its final regular-season series with its seventh consecutive win, a 29-27, 25-22, 25-23 victory at Utah Valley on Monday night.
"Tonight was a good team effort for us," Lopes head coach
Tim Nollan said. "We did not play very clean, but we showed some grit and found a way to win when we we're not at our best. (Senior middle blocker)
Kaira Moss carried us with her points attacking. She was a beast."
Moss finished with 10 kills and seven blocks while GCU senior outside hitter
Yeny Murillo added 14 kills and freshman outside hitter
Ashley Lifgren had 10 kills. They benefitted from the work of sophomore setter
Klaire Mitchell, who delivered 41 assists to match her GCU Divsion I-era program record for a three-set match.
The first set was back and forth from the opening point. GCU (11-2, 11-2 WAC) took a 12-10 lead with four straight points, starting with a Lifgren kill. Utah Valley (11-5, 11-4 WAC) closed the gap until GCU went on another four-point run, highlighted by two kills from Moss and an ace from Lifgren to lead 21-18. The Wolverines had set points at 24-23 and 25-24, but the Lopes fought back each time secured the opening set on a block by Moss and Mitchell.
Utah Valley opened up the second set with three straight points, but GCU responded with a four-point run off kills from three Lopes and an ace from freshman
Mia Goulart. In another long, back-and-forth set, the Lopes managed to pull away aft Utah Valley led 22-21. The Lopes scored the set's final four points, including a block from Mitchell and middle blocker
Hannah Eskes for set point and a Murillo kill for game point.
In the final set, the Wolverines took an early lead, similar to the second set, but held it for most of this set. GCU chipped away until it tied the score at 18-18. The Lopes went on a four-point run, including two Murillo kills, for a 22-19 lead. A block from Eskes and senior opposite hitter
Sarah Hagge gave GCU two set points and Lifgren used the second one to end the match with her 12th kill.
"Now we will watch some film and get ready to make some adjustments for tomorrow," Nollan said.
The Lopes, who clinched second place in the WAC, close out the regular season with an 11 a.m. Tuesday rematch in Orem, Utah.
