GULF SHORES, Ala. – The No. 11 Grand Canyon beach volleyball team split Day 2 of the March to May tournament to move to 7-2. The Lopes fell to No. 2 Florida State 4-1, then bounced back to beat No. 20 Tulane 3-2.
Lopes drop dual vs. No. 2 Florida State
The Seminoles took a 1-0 lead after defeating freshman
Alina Randall and junior
Katie Sarber on Court 5 21-16, 21-9, but the Lopes evened the score with a three-set win on Court 4 by freshman
Allanis Navas and graduate transfer
Paula Hoffmann 18-21, 21-19, 15-8.
Florida State took back the lead after beating the Lopes' No. 1 pair of sophomore
Teagan DeFalco and junior
Bella Bauman 21-18, 21-12.
The dual was clinched for the Seminoles on Court 3 with freshman
Allison Hansen and junior
Taylor Jarzombek losing 14-21, 15-21.
On Court 2, sophomore pair
Anaya Evans and
Madi Relaz lost 14-21, 18-21.
Lopes defeat No. 20 Tulane
The Lopes kicked off the dual with Navas and Hoffmann getting a win on Court 4 21-15, 21-17. The pair remains undefeated at 9-0 this season.
The Waves tied things up on Court 5 as freshman
Krista Rowan and Sarber fell in a close three-set battle 14-21, 21-19, 13-15.
Hansen and Jarzombek defeated the Waves' No. 3 pair 21-12, 21-18 to pull ahead 2-1.
On Court 1, DeFalco and Bauman lost 23-25, 21-19 and the score was tied again at 2-2.
The dual came down to Court 2 with Evans and Relaz. GCU took the first set 21-12 but the Waves forced a third set after winning 25-23. The Lopes won the thrilling third set 15-13 to secure the win over No. 20 Tulane.
Up next, the Lopes face No. LSU on Sunday at 8 a.m. (Phoenix time).
