Sophomore outside hitter earns GCU's first weekly award of 2021
Grand Canyon men's volleyball sophomore Christian Janke earned the team's first weekly award this season as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Defensive Player of the Week. This marks the second time in the outside hitter's career that he has earned a weekly award from the conference.
Janke led the Lopes, who moved to No. 6 in the national rankings, in digs when they pulled off a three-set upset of No. 1 BYU on Thursday. He also tied for the most aces on the team with two and finished second on the team with seven kills for the program's first-ever win against a No. 1-ranked team. Janke scored the set-winning point when GCU won a 45-43 set that set the NCAA record for highest-scoring set.
The Carlsbad, California, native again led the Lopes (2-4, 2-4 MPSF) with seven digs on Saturday, when BYU won the rematch at GCU Arena in straight sets.
The Lopes earned their highest ranking in program history on Monday when they moved up three spots to No. 6 in the NVA/AVCA Division I-II Men's Coaches Poll.
GCU is back in action on March 17 against USC, taking on the Trojans at 6 p.m. at GCU Arena.
