SEATTLE — For Grand Canyon, another late-arriving offense was better than no offense at all.
The Lopes defense continues to be so stalwart that GCU survived going 1 for 6 with seven turnovers in its Saturday night game's first six minutes at Seattle U and still scored 81 points. When the Lopes came on, they did so with a turbo boost for an 81-71 victory that keeps GCU in first place in the WAC with one weekend to go.
The Lopes (14-5, 8-2 WAC) hold a half-game lead on Utah Valley (10-9, 8-3 WAC), which closes with a GCU Arena two-game visit next weekend to decide the regular-season title and WAC Tournament No. 1 seed.
A night after a furious rally came up short, the Lopes trailed 14-13 amid offensive struggles before a 20-point burst over the final 5 1/2 minutes gave them a 33-26 halftime lead. On one of GCU's best 3-point shooting nights of the season, freshman guard
Chance McMillian connected on a pair of 3s in the first half's final 2:15 to help a 13-5 close.
The Lopes hit nine 3-pointers in the game and built up a lead as large as 20 when senior guard
Mikey Dixon connected on a 3 for a 61-41 lead with 9:15 remaining. GCU still led 65-48 on a Midtgaard slam, but Seattle U's Riley Grigsby and Darrion Trammell went on a tear that made a late-game threat.
Grigsby (25 points) and Trammell (28 points) scored all of the Redhawks' points for the final 11 minutes of the game and pulled Seattle U within five with one minute to go before GCU sophomore point guard
Jovan Blacksher Jr. sank four consecutive free throws to ice the win.
GCU senior center Asbjørn Mitdgaard finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds, his career's second best tally, to help the Lopes double the Redhawks, 42-21, on the boards. It was Midtgaard's fifth consecutive double-double, the longest Lopes' streak since 2013 (Killian Larson), and his 10th double-double of the season.
Blacksher rallied from a slow start to lead GCU with 17 points while adding seven assists and three steals. Four GCU scorers hit double figures with 14 points each from senior power forward
Alessandro Lever and senior guard
Mikey Dixon, who scored 10 in the second half.
The Lopes, ranked second nationally for opponent field goal percentage, held Seattle U to 40% shooting from the field after keeping the Redhawks to 36% percent shooting on Friday night. GCU did have its two highest turnover games of the season with 19 and 18, but turned around the first half's unforced errors Saturday night to make only five turnovers in the second half.
Even as Grigsby and Trammell turned out, Midtgaard came up with post position and answers to score nine of GCU's 10 points during a stretch that kept the Lopes ahead 73-61 with 3:11 to play.
