The Grand Canyon women's golf team aims to defend its GCU Invitational title when it hosts the annual event on Monday and Tuesday at GCU Championship Golf Course.
Last season, the Lopes won the 14-team event by one shot over California Baptist. Medalist honors went to GCU's
Alexis Linam. Then a junior, Linam won the tournament with a score of 138 (6 under par). Because of rain, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes. It was the last event for the Lopes during the 2020 campaign, as the COVID-19 pandemic ended up canceling the rest of the season.
This GCU Invitational field includes the Lopes, UC Riverside, Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona, Montana State, Southern Utah, UTEP, Idaho, North Dakota State, CSU Bakersfield, Seattle U, California Baptist, UT Rio Grande Valley, Utah Valley and South Dakota.
There will be a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on both days of the tournament. Monday will consist of 36 holes and Tuesday will finish with 18 holes.
GCU was last in action at The Rebel Beach Invitational, hosted by UNLV at Spanish Trail Country Club. While GCU finished in eighth place in the 13-team field, the Lopes were in contention within six shots of the lead with nine holes remaining.
GCU senior
Siripatsorn Patchana tied for seventh place in Las Vegas and earned a WAC Golfer of the Week award.
The GCU Invitational kicks off four straight tournaments in Arizona for the Lopes. GCU is next in action at the Clover Cup at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa.
